Black Oakland Police Officers Slam Schaaf over OPD Texting, Human Trafficking Scandals
Oakland Black Officers Association accused Mayor Libby Schaaf of unfairly identifying the race of Black police officers who allegedly sent racist text messages.
The BPOA’s letter was in response to comments made by Schaaf at a press conference last Friday in which the mayor revealed an ongoing investigation into “racist” text messages. Schaaf said at the conference that she thought it was relevant to note that the officers under investigation for sending racists texts were African American and also high-ranking in the department.

The latest controversy over racist text messages is unconnected to the investigation of sex trafficking, Schaaf said.

Reaction to water hose comments, racially insensitive comments made by acting assistant police chief David Downing
OAKLAND (KRON) — Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf has angered some city council members after she revealed the race of the officers who are being investigated for sending racist text messages.
Mayor Schaaf is in the midst of handling her first real crisis at the Oakland Police Department, a major sex scandal, when more troubling information came to light about OPD officers using racially insensitive language.
When discussing the issue, Schaaf gave little information about the incident but made a comment that did not sit well with some city council members.
“We think it’s relevant to share that the texts were sent by African-American officers,” Schaaf said.
City council members say that it was a poor choice on Schaaf’s part.
